  • use the Declaration of Independence to explain the colonists' views of government and why they chose to separate from England
  • describe the consequences of the American Revolution
  • describe the problems with the Articles of Confederation
  • describe why the Articles of Confederation failed
  • describe the role of Shays' Rebellion in holding the Constitutional Convention
  • describe how the fears of colonists, and the failure of the Articles of Confederation, led to the specific design of the Constitution
  • identify the major issues debated at the Constitutional Convention

  • explain how the Constitution resolved concerns about the sharing and separation of power in our federal government
  • explain how the checks and balances system works in regards to our three branches of government
